On July 6, 1988, during routine maintenance, a catastrophic explosion occurred on the Piper Alpha oil platform, 120 miles off Aberdeen, Scotland. Due to a fatal chain of operational mistakes, this tragedy resulted in multiple explosions and significant loss of life, remaining one of the deadliest offshore oil disasters in history.
