Hello, I’m Stephen Fitzmaurice and I’ve written two chapters for Advances in Educational Interpreting. The second chapter is "There Is No I(interpreter) in Your Team.
IDEA considers educational interpreters as related service providers yet the role of educational interpreters has been misunderstood for over 35 years. Although educational interpreters know the Deaf student very well, they are frequently not included on the IEP team. And we know, Deaf students do not have sufficient support, and to compensate, educational interpreters are adopting multiple roles without being on the IEP team.
Using the lens of role theory to examine the perception of administrators and teachers about an educational interpreter’s status and perceptions of who is responsible for the education of deaf students.
This chapter notes that role ambiguity and role conflict create a multitude of role expectations for educational interpreters that simply exceed their capacity to enact. And because there is a significant lack of agreement on the educational interpreters’ status which creates a negative role conflict for educational interpreters.
I encourage you to recognize the vital role educational interpreters have, beyond simply meeting the essential communication needs of the deaf student, and absolutely need to be included on the IEP team.
