Business leaders and policymakers at the World Economic Forum issued a warning that protectionist moves by countries will cause the global food crisis to worsen. India capped sugar exports to safeguard its own supplies and ease inflation, days after it banned wheat exports which sent global prices soaring. As the world's largest sugar producer and the second-largest exporter, India announced that shipments would be limited to 10 million tons to September. Food security concerns have been at the forefront of the Global Markets Forum in Davos. Gita Gopinath, first deputy managing director of the International Monetary Fund, noted that “20 plus countries have put restrictions on exports of food and the fertilizers, and that can only compound the problem." Meanwhile World Food Program Executive Director, David Beasley highlighted that the number of people "marching to starvation" has increased drastically from 80 million to 276 million over the past few years.
