Julius Caesar, the Roman dictator, was assassinated on March 15th, 44 BC. The assassination occurred in the Theatre of Pompey in Rome, where Caesar had gone to attend a meeting of the Senate.
The group of assassins, led by Gaius Cassius Longinus and Marcus Brutus, were a group of senators who opposed Caesar's increasing power and suspected him of wanting to make himself king. They stabbed Julius Caesar over 60 times, with Caesar trying to defend himself but to no avail. Caesar died on the spot, and his death marked the end of the Roman Republic and the beginning of the Roman Empire.
The assassins believed that by killing Caesar they would restore the Roman Republic, but their plan backfired and it led to civil war, as many of Caesar's followers, such as Mark Antony, wanted to avenge his death. The event also influenced literature, plays like Shakespeare's Julius Caesar was written with the assassination and its aftermath as the central point of the play.
