Merdeka Square, also known as Dataran Merdeka, is a historical landmark located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It is situated in front of the Sultan Abdul Samad Building and is also known as the 'Independence Square'. It is the site of the proclamation of Malaysia's independence from the British in 1957. The square is surrounded by a number of historical buildings, including the Sultan Abdul Samad Building, St. Mary's Anglican Cathedral, Royal Selangor Club and the National History Museum. The square is also home to the world's tallest flagpole, standing at 94 meters high. Merdeka Square is a popular tourist attraction and hosts many cultural events throughout the year, including National Day celebrations and the annual Merdeka Parade.
