Matt Hangen is the CEO of a water charity trying to put itself out of business. Matt was labeled a hopeless delinquent as a child and later proclaimed medically disabled as an adult but defied the odds to become the CEO and Ironman athlete he is today. When Matt first went on a charity trip in 2005 he saw a distressing disconnect between the desire to help and the way in which people were helping. He believes that charities, in a desire to do good in the moment, are not doing the ultimate good for those they’re serving. Charities raise money for causes, but shouldn’t they be raising money to end causes? Instead of giving to and walking away, what if the beneficiary could be empowered to be the benefactor? When we label people “poor” we miss out on their potential to be the heroes of the story, to unlock their potential. Matt doesn’t see “the bottom billion”, he sees a tinderbox of potential. Based on that belief, over the last 11 years, Matt has built a model where charity is used to drill wells managed by the local water businesses they kickstart to create jobs, ensure water flows forever, and provide the increasing convenience that we expect in our own homes.
