STORYLINE
Serbian President Boris Tadic arrived in the Croatian city of Vukovar on Thursday to pay his respects to 200 Croats slain by Serbs during the 1991 war in eastern Croatia.
He is the first Serbian leader to visit Vukovar since the war, when Serbs' relentless bombardment levelled the town to the ground, leaving scores of Croats dead and forcing others out.
Later on Thursday, Tadic is expected to lay a wreath at a mass grave at Ovcara, then a pig farm, where more than 200 Croats dragged out of a local hospital were slain by Serbs when they seized Vukovar - a massacre that remains a painful symbol for Croats of Serb wartime brutality.
Nikola Tarle, a Croatian veteran of the 1991 war, said that while he wanted to remember certain things "we can't live in the past."
"We have to look to the future," he said.
Tadic and his Croatian counterpart, Ivo Josipovic, will also lay wreaths for 18 Serbs killed by Croats in a nearby village in the clearest message yet of condemnation of all wartime crimes and the need for reconciliation between the two countries after the bloody war and subsequent mutual accusations over atrocities.
Serbia backed Croatian Serbs when they rebelled against the country's independence from Yugoslavia, triggering the war.
Some in Croatia oppose Tadic's visit, saying he should have first admitted that Serbs were aggressors in the war.
