(27 Jul 2015) German Chancellor Angela Merkel has welcomed Turkey's engagement in the fight against the Islamic State group (IS), a German government spokesman said on Monday.
Turkey has been carrying out airstrikes against IS targets in Syria, stepping up its involvement in the country's increasingly complex civil war, as well as Kurdish rebel positions in northern Iraq.
Syria's main Kurdish militia, the Kurdish People's Protection Units, or YPG, said on Monday they had also been targeted by Turkish shelling on the border village of Til Findire on Sunday evening.
Speaking in Berlin, Georg Streiter said that Merkel had spoken to Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davotuglu and they had agreed "it is the right of Turkey to take action against the PKK (Kurdistan Workers' Party) if they conduct terrorist activities".
The Syrian Kurds are among the most effective ground forces battling the IS group, but Turkey fears they could revive an insurgency against Ankara in pursuit of an independent state.
On Sunday, Turkey called for a meeting of its NATO allies to discuss threats to its security, as well as its airstrikes.
