How long is your passport valid? Hello, this is Reinhard von Hennigs. And this question is not only a question of summer travel, summer vacation, and whatever everybody has in mind in this post-pandemic world. The validity of passports matters every day, not just in the summer, however, as many travelers travel in the summer only, that's why in the summer processing times for passports increase significantly.

But what about if you live abroad? If you live abroad for a professional assignment, if you live abroad for a couple of months, if you live abroad for a longer amount of time, and you realize that your passport will expire or even worse, your passport has expired? This may compromise your local status in the country where you reside because a valid passport may be required, but most importantly, how can you replace a passport?

Historically pre Corona, you would have walked to the embassy, maybe you needed an appointment, checked with a consulate, and got your passport issued in due course. However, in the current situation, there are many embassies and consulates that work on limited staffing, limited operating hours, and Corona distancing requirements.

Corona took a toll on passport renewals and rumor is out that over 100,000 US travelers abroad are waiting for that passport, which is not being issued right now because the passport processing at the consulates and the embassies is no longer effective. I am not sure whether or not this is only a problem for United States citizens.

But I can imagine that other countries may have similar issues with limited opening hours. So my quick thoughts of advice are, if you know that you're traveling, if you know that you're out and about to need your passport, check your renewal situation now and check the expiration date today.
