5- Door to Hell

The Door to Hell is an open pit of natural gas burning for more than four decades! Engineers set it on fire in 1971 thinking that the gas pocket would run out in only 4 weeks...

4- Free Fuel for Everyone

Car drivers in Turkmenistan are entitled to 120 litres of free fuel per month. One of the largest gas producers in the world, the economy relies purely on petroleum.

In 1998, the Turkmen president Nizayov issued a 12 meter golden statue... of himself! It used to turn in the direction of the sun, but stopped since 2010 by the newer president.

In 2002, the government passed a law to change the names of the months and days. The new names include a month named after the leader's title, and another... for his mother!!!
