Melasma is a type of skin condition characterized by blotchy patches, generally in areas where sun hits the face. Hyperpigmentation is a result of overproduction of melanin by melanocytes. It is more common among women, those who tan easily, and with brown/darker complexion. Several factors cause melasma: genes, sun exposure, hormones.
Several treatment modalities can be used to control melasma: laser, Rx topical or oral, peels.
