The Taliban has announced a new caretaker government within three weeks following the takeover of Afghanistan.
The Cabinet includes a man listed on the FBI’s most wanted list.
University of Melbourne Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Michael Wesley says there is some “scepticism” over the Taliban’s claims to be different and less violent than the last time they were in power.
“I think the rest of the world continues to play very much a waiting game, particularly the United States and its allies,” Professor Wesley told Sky News Australia.
“I think there is some scepticism, justifiably, about Taliban’s claims that it won’t be as brutal and as hard-lined as it was when it was last in power in Afghanistan.
“I think the announcement of the interim government does suggest, however, that change within the Taliban is only skin deep, if that.”
