Flamenco dancing is an art form of Spanish music and dance that developed in Andalusia, southern Spain, during the 16th century. Flamenco music consists mainly of a solo singer accompanied by guitar. The dancers’ movements are expressive and graceful, utilizing fast footwork to express emotion through facial expressions. It is performed by dancers who use the footwork, hand movements and posture of classical ballet to create an illusion of flying.
Flamenco is a form of Spanish music that evolved from the styles of Andalusia. The flamenco guitar has been played in Spain since at least the 15th century, and it’s believed to have originated with the Aljamiado (Arabic for “the people who speak Arabic”) who settled in southern Spain during Moorish rule. Today, flamenco is considered one of the most important contributions to western art music by non-European cultures.
Over the years, flamenco has evolved and changed, even though it’s still considered a traditional form of Spanish dance. The earliest flamenco style was called "taranta," which is a combination of two dances: the bailaor (dancer) and the rumba (percussion). The bailaor danced with his or her hips and shoulders.
A flamenco guitar is a type of acoustic guitar used in the music of Spain. The name “flamenco” comes from the Spanish word for flame, which was first used in reference to the bright color that appears on the backs of many guitars made by Andalusian luthiers.
