Shalom my friends, this is Simcha Hochbaum from Hebron. This Shabbat is super exciting. For the first time ever Abraham comes to the Holy Land. And the first Jew to come to Eretz Yisrael. Abraham wastes no time. He travels throughout the whole land to Shchem, to Beth El. Eventually he has to detour down to Egypt. The first time ever we read Abraham made a permanent residence and settled in the Land of Israel was here in Hebron. And the passuk tells us, the verse tells us, Abraham pitched his tent and settles in the bank of Mamre. There in Hebron he built an altar to Hashem. Abraham built an alter to Hashem. He built an alter in Nablus, in Beth El, you can see the mezuzot on the different doorposts taken for the stones of Shchem, Beit El & Hebron. The alter Abraham built in Hebron is paving the way for a very unique type of relationship that a Jew can have with Hashem and can have with the society. Hebron is a lashon of haver, connection. Rashi says Abraham connected himself to Hashem. Sometimes I do something because I'm looking for reciprocation. I'll do a nice deed to someone I'll be friendly with someone, because they did good to me, I want to reciprocate that. Sometimes I'm
trying to connect to someone because I'm looking for forgiveness for atonement and that person will grant it to me. Sometimes I have a relationship between us and God is doing something on the level of Mesirat Nefesh self-sacrifice, doing something for the sake of doing a favor and do an act for the sake of just connection. This Shabbat is the Shabbat of Hebron, of building that alter. The Rebbe says eventually that alter of the Third Temple which will be built based on the alter that Abraham built here in Hebron. And so we can build this relationship within our homes, with our students, with our colleagues, with our neighbors, and God willing we will be privileged to build the ultimate alter in Jerusalem, the Beit HaMikdash, Amen and Amen.
