Umuahia-born Oji was involved in the first army coup of January 1966. He received his training at the Nigerian Military Training College, Kaduna and MONS Officer Cadet School, Aldershot in England.
He was part of the Nigerian Contingent during the United Nations Peace Keeping Operations in the Congo in 1962.
Prior to his role with the Biafran 12th Division, Oji had been the commanding officer of the 9th Battalion and later on in 1969 would become principal staff officer at the 4th Commando Division in charge of operations.
