Dame Cicely Saunders International Seminar by Dr Richard Harding, Reader in Palliative Care, King's College London, Cicely Saunders Institute.
Abstract: Palliative and end-of-life care services are striving to reach a goal of 'palliative care for all'. This includes a focus on reducing social exclusion. LGBT people may have greater need yet poorer access to such services. Building on a systematic review, we have conducted an original UK-wide study, conducting in-depth interviews with LGBT people across the UK (and their carers) who are facing advanced illness. We are also collaborating on a similar study in Zimbabwe. The data have also led us to investigate bereavement experiences, as our interviews revealed this to be a time of potential disenfranchisement.
