Violetta, in her utter desperation, tries to think of the words she might write to Alfredo, when he enters, worried and upset because his father has left him a "reproachful message". Violetta urges him to try to calm down his father, and then, devastated and completely down-hearted, begs Alfredo to reassure her of his love:
"Amami, Alfredo, amami quanto io t'amo, quanto io t'amo, addio!"
(Love me, Alfredo, love me as much as I love you, farewell!)

Then she leaves in agitation.
