If Samba is the heartbeat of Brazil, then Pedra do Sal is the heart itself.
It was the workplace, home, and even graveyard for untold numbers of the roughly one million enslaved Africans who survived the journey across the Atlantic and were unloaded at the port district nearby. Pedra do Sal ("rock of salt") was given its name because it is an enormous granite boulder where salt was unloaded off ships and carried up the giant hill by slaves. After abolition, the slaves set up homes and the area became known as "Little Africa". The growing Bahian community would meet at the bottom of the rock, bang on drums and dance, giving birth to samba. When night falls, Pedra do Sal still attracts hundreds of Cariocas, young and old. in search of a massive party!
