(17 Aug 2020) Feminist activists took to the streets of Mexico City on Sunday to protest gender violence and inequality.
In the midst of a strong presence of female police officers that nearly quadrupled that of protesters, the demonstrators marched through the streets, with some chanting messages against sexual assaults of women along the way.
Miguel Barrera, founder of the human rights watch group Marabunta Brigade, said the demonstration was to highlight femicides in general but also recent cases of violence against women.
One woman at the march said she wanted to bring attention to a highly publicized case in local media of a former government employee in Puerto Vallarta who was found by police with a nude 10-year-old in his car.
As it has become common in women marches, demonstrators also carried images of alleged rapists and abusers.
At one point, a clash between some demonstrators and police officers erupted, leaving at least one demonstrator injured.
According to official figures, 3,825 women met violent deaths in 2019, an average of more than 10 per day and a rise of 7% over the previous year.
The vast majority of all crimes in the country go unpunished.
