Latest Update : Sri Lanka President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled the country early this morning, hours before he was due to step down from his post. Rajapaksa, his wife and two bodyguards took a Sri Lankan Air Force plane to Male, the capital of the Maldives. The Chief of the Defence Staff, at a press conference this afternoon, appealed to protesters to maintain calm and help the forces in ensuring law and order in the island nation. Sri Lanka declared a state of emergency today as massive protests gripped Colombo after Rajapaksa fled the country. An indefinite curfew has been imposed across the Western Province to contain the spiraling protests.
