The official launch and first deliveries of the second-generation 2022 Ford Ranger Raptor are less than a month away, but in the meantime we’ve scored a preview drive of a pre-production prototype and it’s safe to say the long waiting times for many buyers will be worth it.

Now priced from $85,490 plus on-road costs, Ford’s all-new range-topping dual-cab 4x4 off-road super-ute is over $6000 pricier than the popular original that arrived to critical acclaim just four years ago.

But the Australian-developed 2022 Ford Ranger Raptor rides on a redesigned T6 ladder frame and also brings a new permanent 4x4 system, driver-adjustable Fox coil-over shocks, lockable front diff and all of the technical advances seen in the new Ranger.

The highlight, however, is a new level of performance from a 292kW/583Nm 3.0-litre twin-turbo petrol V6 that almost doubles the power output and halves the acceleration time of the 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel it replaces, addressing the only complaint we really had about the old Raptor.
