It's not uncommon for teenagers or young adults to really want to undergo a rhinoplasty or a nose job. And the question arises when's a good time? In order to understand when's a good time, you need to really understand why timing is such an important factor. As you continue to age, your face continues to grow and any surgical alterations of the nose can weaken the nose and weaken that central pillar in the central part of the face and cause alterations in the growth of your face and skeleton.
Generally speaking, young girls at the ages of 15 or even 16 can undergo a rhinoplasty. For men or young males, it's really a little bit older, 16 or 17. And I always ask patients, I ask their parents, has this patient stopped growing? Have they hit puberty? Have they reached their puberty milestones? And if they have, and they've been stable and their height's been stable, then you can really start to begin to talk to them about a rhinoplasty.
The bigger the change that a teenager wants, the more important it is that they wait. Small changes like reduction in a hump, maybe making the tip a little bit more fine, those are pretty well tolerated. That's the physical aspect of it. There's also a psychological and social aspect of it that a lot of surgeons may not necessarily pay attention to. So I always talk to my young patients and really try and understand why it is that they want to alter their nose. I need to understand is this something that impacts their self confidence? Is this because of bullying? You need to understand the social and the psychosocial aspects of why they're seeking those changes. And that becomes a whole different conversation with the patient and their parents. And if you feel that the patients has realistic goals and expectations and it's line with what you could do for them surgically, then you're a good match and you could proceed with surgery.
