NEWS 2022 Mazda 2 updated with new G15 Pure SP variant | Review | Interior - The 2022 Mazda 2 hatchback and sedan range has been updated for the new model year, with the addition of a new mid-tier, sport-themed G15 Pure SP variant.
The existing G15 Pure hatch and sedan, G15 Evolve hatch, G15 GT hatch and sedan variants are almost completely unchanged, however rear seatbelt reminders now come standard across the line-up in accordance with new local legislation.
Meanwhile, the new G15 Pure SP (shown below) – which sits between the G15 Pure and G15 Evolve – picks up black 16-inch alloy wheels, chrome exhaust tips, exterior highlights, black mirrors, and a black grille as standard. Inside the cabin, black upholstery with red trim completes the look.The 82kW/144Nm 1.5-litre non-turbo petrol four-cylinder is retained as the sole engine, and can be paired to a six-speed automatic across the range or, in the base G15 Pure (non-SP), a six-speed manual transmission as standard.Autonomous emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, and blind-spot monitoring come standard on all versions of the Mazda 2.
Eight colours are available across the range, with Platinum Quartz Metallic (new for 2022), Sonic Silver Metallic, Deep Crystal Blue Mica, Jet Black Mica, and Snowflake White Pearl Mica being no-cost options. Polymetal Grey Metallic (now available on the sedan, along with the hatch) Machine Grey Metallic, and Soul Red Crystal Metallic can be had for $495.
The 2022 Mazda 2 range will go on sale towards the end of 2021, with pricing to be announced closer to the line-up's arrival in showrooms. Currently, the G15 Pure sedan and hatch both start from $20,990 before on-road costs.The Mazda 2 is the latest model in the Japanese automaker’s range to receive a sporty-looking SP variant, following the CX-5, CX-8 and CX-9.
Elsewhere in the Mazda 2 range, Platinum Quartz Metallic will be available on the sedan and hatch while Polymetal Grey, previously exclusive to the hatchback, will be available on the sedan.
These join the existing Machine Grey and Soul Red Crystal metallic options, with Sonic Silver metallic and Deep Crystal Blue, Jet Black and Snowflake White pearl mica options offered at no extra cost.
The G15 Evolve hatch will continue to come with navy blue cloth trim, while the G15 GT hatch and sedan will still feature blue/grey leather and synthetic suede trim.All Mazda 2 models will continue to be powered by a naturally-aspirated 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine producing 82kW of power and 144Nm of torque.
It’s available with either a six-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission, but the former is vastly more popular – the manual accounts for less than one per cent of sales.
