You guessed it right, The rule of 144 says that if you know in how many years, Money Quadruples, then 144 divided by the number of years, will give the answer which is the rate of return of your investment.
Let's say money Quadruples in 10 years, 144 divided by 19, answer is 14.4
The rate of return is 14.4%
Similarly if you know the rate of return on your investment, then 144 divided by that number, tell you in how many years, your money will Quadruple.

eg if money Quadruples in 12 years, then 144 divided by 12, answer is 12.
The rate of return is 12%
