Now are there any non-surgical treatments for migraine surgery other than medicines? One option is something called Botox, botulinum toxin. This can be used for a lot of patients to improve their migraines. How? Well a lot of patients with migraines have what known as trigger sites in their face. These are nerves in the face that gets irritated and when the nerve gets irritated that's what starts the migraine. The nerve gets irritated by many things. It can be a muscle that's pulling on it. It can be a blood vessel nearby or it can be a fibrous band. In migraine surgery what we do is we release these triggers and that's what improves the migraine. Now not everyone wants to undergo surgical procedures. So how does botulinum toxin help? Botulinum toxin is a chemical that weakens muscles. So if the trigger nerve is being irritated by a muscle and you give Botulinum toxin it can reduce the amount of irritation that's happening to the nerve and it can reduce the frequency and severity of the migraines. So how is this done? We identify the trigger nerve whether it's above the forehead or on the sides of the temple and then we give this Botulinum toxin injection around that nerve so this relaxes the nerve. This whole procedure is a non-surgical procedure. It hardly takes 10 minutes to do you come get it done and you are back to your routine the same day. There's no down time or recovery time. You will start seeing its effects within 5 to 6 days and its effects last for around 5 to 6 months. I know this because I suffer from migraines myself. I get Botulinum toxin in my eyebrows to reduce my migraines. So this can be something to consider if you're suffering from migraines. You're taking medicines and it's not giving you the relief that you're looking for. Another thing is if Botulinum toxin works well it is a good indication that a migraine surgery might also help you. So if you think that you have migraine trigger sites there is a certain part in your face where in the migraine always comes you can identified when you press it it feels a little bit different then you can be a candidate for both Botulinum toxin treatment and migraine surgery.
