John Smid was the director of Love in Action from 1990-2008. Founded in 1973, Love in Action was the United States' oldest official "ex-gay" ministry. During his tenure at Love in Action, John counseled 475 residential clients. Love in Action was a high profile ministry, with John appearing on ABC's 20/20, The Jerry Springer Show, CNN's Larry King Live. He was also interviewed by The Washington Post and The New York Times.

Today, John is out of the closet and outspoken in his denunciation of "ex-gay" programs. He says they are dangerous, completely ineffective and he warns people to stay away. John lives in Texas and is married to Larry McQueen.
