Why Alpine F1 will use Mercedes F1 engines
Alpine has reached an agreement with Mercedes to use the German automaker's power unit from 2026 through at least the 2030 season. As part of the deal, Alpine will also adopt Mercedes' gearbox in 2026, though they are expected to begin producing their own gearbox in-house at Enstone starting in 2027.
Last month, Alpine announced plans to close their in-house engine program at the end of the upcoming season as part of their “Hypertech” transformation strategy. Prior to finalizing the deal with Mercedes, Alpine had been exploring options with other engine suppliers, with Mercedes ultimately emerging as the preferred partner.
Alpine will continue building their own power units through the 2025 season. In 2026, they’ll transition to Mercedes engines in line with new power unit regulations that emphasize enhanced battery technology and 100% sustainable fuels.
Recently, Alpine secured their best performance of the season with a double podium finish in Brazil, boosting them three spots to sixth place in the Constructors' Championship with three races remaining. The team is currently undergoing a period of transition, with Oli Oakes stepping in as Team Principal and Flavio Briatore returning as Executive Advisor.
