Aoleang is the most important annual festival of the Konyak Naga tribe of Nagaland in northeastern India. The celebrations are a riot of coIour and activity as people dress up in their colourful best, accessorized with beautiful traditional jewellery. They spend the entire day dancing, singing, feasting and merrymaking.
Things become truly exciting at the arrival of groups of men in traditional costume with faces covered in war paint and old muzzle loading guns and machetes slung over their shoulders. They charge at each other in mock headhunting battles, letting out shrill war cries, waving their machetes and shooting their guns. The atmosphere is electric as the air fills with gun smoke and battle cries.
Travel with Anvayins in the month of April and witness the Aoleang festival in its full glory.
