Watch live with The Washington Post as the Senate Homeland Security Committee’s investigations subcommittee probes the merger between the PGA Tour and Saudi-backed LIV Golf. The deal, announced last month, blindsided the sports world and marked a major win for Saudi Arabia as the country works to bolster its image — and influence — in the Western world. The deal marked a drastic shift for the PGA Tour, which had previously said that any players who joined its deep-pocketed rival, LIV Golf, would be banned from PGA competitions. Now, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund will become one of its major sponsors.
Top of mind for lawmakers: the money behind the deal, possible implications for Saudi Arabia‘s influence in the United States, concerns about Saudi Arabia’s human rights violations, and what the merger could mean for the future of golf, a sport that the PGA Tour dominated until LIV Golf began luring away top players.
While the PGA Tour and LIV Golf have touted the deal as a win, the golf giants now face scathing criticism — the PGA Tour for allegations of hypocrisy after players lost out on lucrative deals, and LIV for Saudi Arabia’s human rights record. Days before the hearing, former AT&T executive Randall Stephenson resigned his position on the PGA Tour’s policy board, writing that he had “serious concerns” about the deal.
Ron Price, the chief operating officer of the PGA Tour, and Jimmy Dunne, a PGA Tour board member, will testify before the subcommittee.
Libby Casey will anchor live coverage from the Post newsroom, where she will be accompanied by James Hohmann. Rhonda Colvin will report live from Capitol Hill. Read more: [ Ссылка ]. Subscribe to The Washington Post on YouTube: [ Ссылка ]
