Rare Aroid Soil Mix and Potting Up
The vast majority of our beloved Anthuriums & Philodendron grow naturally on the western slopes of the Andes mountains within the tropical rain forests of Ecuador and Colombia.
These species are grown more like orchids than any other tropical plant and require frequent dampening of their roots, but they must not be allowed to dry out.
The majority grow up the sides of trees or up in the canopy of the rain forest.
Proper care will be required if your Anthurium & Philodendron is to survive and thrive in your UK home conditions.
Your precious plant will arrive potted in our special Ultimate Tropicals substrate mix that reflects their natural conditions and will allow for a free draining medium.
Chunky Orchid bark 30%.
Perlite 30%
Coir 20%
Activated charcoal 10%
Worm castings 10%
The mix will allow for free draining but also the retention of moisture to supply the roots when required. The addition of chunky orchid bark keeps the soil loose and allows the roots to attach, just like they would in nature to the side of a tree. The mix also ensures that the roots will receive a plentiful supply of oxygen and light, this is further enhanced with the use of orchid pots with a ridged bottom and side vents. The addition of activated charcoal will also increase drainage and take advantage of the tiny air spaces to grow beneficial microbes. Activated charcoal also assists in removing any toxins that build up in the soil. Finally, a small amount of worm castings to provide a natural fertilizer.
