As human activities are the root of many environmental concerns, it has become crucial to encourage individuals to adopt a more environmentally responsible behaviour with awareness being a key to shaping behaviour. Studies on how one Pro-Environmental Behaviour (PEBs) will influence adopting similar behaviours have researched PEBs within the holiday context (onsite). This study explores the impact of holiday experiences on an individual’s PEB at home (off-site) using the Attitude-Behaviour Context Theory.
Longitudinal methods were utilised to investigate these commitments to environmental conservation on-site and those following their visit. The time-lagged studies found that behaviours on holiday have limited impact on behaviours at home, highlighting the importance of understanding the impact context has on individual actions.
This paper found it is economically beneficial for stakeholders to justify travel by balancing the severe environmental impacts of a short holiday with long-term positive behaviour changes instilled in tourists when they return home.
