In this video, we will show you how to get to Las Grietas & Tortuga Bay in the Galapagos Islands.
Our first stop in the Galapagos was Santa Cruz Island, we stayed in the main tourist hub Puerto Ayora.
We had 5 days to spend in Santa Cuz, some of the main attractions are the Charles Darwin research center, Tortuga Bay, Las Grietas, Fish market, tunnels, and El Chato.
We spent our first full day, visiting the Charles Darwin research center.
It’s a short 20-30 minute walk from the center of town in Puerto Ayora.
You can expect to see lizards, marine iguanas, Galapagos finches, and of course the main attraction The Galapagos tortoise.
The research center had 3 species of Galapagos tortoises and all different ages of tortoises.
We saw newborn babies that we’re less than a year old and some adult tortoises that would be well over 100 years old. It was a ton of fun and we’re surprised how many tortoises there we’re at the research center.
The next day we made our way to Tortuga Bay, it’s a long walk in the direct sun.
The walk is beautiful, it’s an amazing path built out of the islands volcanic rocks and it winds through the desert.
The desert is filled with a variety of cactuses, birds, mice, lizards, and much more.
When you arrive at Tortuga Bay, the sand is bright white and powdery soft.
The current was strong the day we went and they had a red flag up warning you to not go swimming.
We still went for a dip in the shallows and spent some time walking down the beach and exploring.
There were also some small pools, protected by coral reefs and rocks that would allow you to swim and snorkel.
Another day, we decided to make our way to Las Grietas.
This was our favorite activity in Santa Cruz! We took a short boat taxi from the main dock to another part of the island.
The cost is only $0.80 USD per person.
Once you reach the other side, you have a 20-30 minute walk to Las Grietas. 15 minutes or less into the walk you will come across a beautiful beach, you can swim or snorkel there.
We decided to do some snorkeling and to our surprise, we got to swim with two baby golden rays.
When you arrive at Las Grietas, you will be greeted by a park supervisor that will explain how and where to swim.
Las Grietas is a series of 3 pools that you can swim in that is surrounded by tall cliffs.
The water is crystal clear and there are some beautiful species of fish to see. We arrived at 10AM, there were only 8-10 people when we arrived.
We left at around 12PM, by the time we left there were over 100 people swimming around us, so we were glad we went so early.
The rest of our time on Santa Cruz Island was spent touring the town, shopping, and eating at some of the local restaurants.
We also spent a significant amount of time at the Fish Market.
The Fish Market in Puerto Ayora has a few seals, pelicans, boobies and other birds that scoop up anything they can get their hands on, it’s quite the spectacle.
