Lyndon B Johnson became of the United states on the same day that John F Kennedy was Assassinated. That was the 22nd of November 1963. Johnson aimed to create a great Society but got bogged down in the Vietnam war. He was the 36th President. He came from Stonewall, Texas. He was elected to Congress at the age of 28. A very ambitious man, he became Majority leader of the United states Senate in 1954. He was John f Kennedy s running mate in the 1960 presidential election. As President he pushed 3 civil rights acts through Congress He also set up Medicare and Medicaid. He supported the higher education bill which made Grant's and loans available to poorer students. The Tonkin resolution in 1964 brought the United states into the Vietnam war in a far bigger scale than before. This was Johnson biggest mistake as president. On the domestic scene he pushed through the social security amendment bill and also brought a greater degree of fairness to immigration laws His work on civil rights was his greatest achievement in American history. Today hes remembered as the man who aimed to create a great Society but got bogged down in the Vietnam war. He died in Stonewall , Texas in 1973 at the age of 64.
