This video is an overview of my 1987 560SL on Nov 5, 2021 when I first started this YouTube channel. I talk about what I have done to this car so far and I discuss what I hope to achieve by the end of this video series. The car has been sitting in my garage since 2008 and the goal is to start this car for the first time on YouTube and/or Facebook Live.
I'm Rebuilding my 87' 560SL and I thought I would share my experience and document my journey. I want to start off by thanking Mike from "Mikes Mercs and other cars" for inspiring me to upload videos to YouTube. You should definitely subscribe to his R107 channel. I binge watch his videos.

The journey actually began after I purchased this gorgeous red 1987 560SL at an auction on Dec 19, 2005. I carefully drove the car home as I knew it was sitting in storage for years and I didn't like the puddles of oil I saw under it. After getting the car home and cleaning things up I found most of the oil was coming from the top so I sealed it all up and started on the rolling restoration. It first started when I needed to replace a front shock. This turned into a complete suspension rebuild and beyond (at least that's where my forum posts started - 09-16-2006):

While in the process I decided to do the rear wheel bearings as well (10-07-2006):

While I had things torn out I found problems with the rear subframe (10-16-2006):

After all that work and pain what else could go wrong with this car? How about huge amounts of oil pouring out the exhaust (04-22-2007):
Huge Amounts of Oil Blowing out of Exhaust. Any Ideas?

It was here when I gave up! I WAS SICK OF THIS CAR. It wasn't until February 2008 (02-12-2008) when I decided to try again. So I made a new post and that's when we discovered what the real problem was with all that oil. The actual cause of all this oil was that the cam oiler tubes had blown off the heads. So all that oil filled the covers until it eventually blew past the valves. So I decided if I'm going to have the covers off why not replace the timing chains, cam gears, guides and who knows what else???
I'm stumped with my 87 560SL (that puddle of oil stumped me):

After putting in new cam gears, chains and guides I thought I would finally be in the clear. But not so fast. Now the transmission wouldn't go into reverse and sometimes it wouldn't go into gear. Not only would it not shift properly, but oil started leaking out from under the car (CRAP!). I HATE IT, I HATE IT, I HATE IT! So I parked the car until October 2021 when I finally decided it was time to get this car back on the road.
I'm posting my journey on YouTube mainly for my own history and documentation of this car. I sure hope things work out, but as you will see, this car will make it hard on me. I'm already having problems and I just got started.....

I will be doing a Facebook Live (or YouTube live) when I start this car for the very first time since 2008. Make sure you get notified when I publish a new video so you don't miss this event.
