국방부 "한일군사정보협정, 22일 국무회의 상정
South Korea's Cabinet will hold discussions today... to approve a military intelligence-sharing deal with Japan.
Seoul's defense ministry says... once the deal is passed,... it plans to make the pact official as soon as Wednesday.
Kim Hyun-bin has more.
South Korea's defense ministry said on Monday that the Cabinet will hold talks the following day on the so-called General Security of Military Information Agreement, despite resistance from the nation's opposition parties.
"If the agreement passes the National Assembly on Tuesday, November 22nd, it will need presidential approval before it can be finalized."
If the agreement clears both of those hurdles, the two countries must sign the deal, which could happen as early as Wednesday.
Seoul and Tokyo also have to send a written notice to each other to show the legal requirements have been met, and then the agreement will officially take effect.
The two countries initiated the agreement back in 2012, but were blocked by opposition parties and civic groups in South Korea, who said they were against the deal because it had been arranged in secret.
Many Koreans are also against the pact because of the history of Japan's colonial rule of Korea from 1910 to 1945... and the lingering historical and territorial issues between the two countries.
"But North Korea's ever-growing nuclear and missile threats have served as fresh momentum for the discussions. Pyongyang has conducted over 20 ballistic missile launches and two nuclear tests in this year alone.
