Sanzen-in (三千院) is a monzeki temple in Ōhara, Kyoto. [note: monzeki refers to japanese bhuddist priests of imperial lineage]. The temple is about 1 hour by bus from Kyoto station.
The temple is divided into several areas. After the entrance gate, there are several interconnected buildings, which open up to the Shuheki-en garden (the garden includes a pond and hills). If you follow the path through the building, proceeding to the 1st floor, where the Shinden Hall is connected by a corridor. From here you finally get to the moss garden, which is shaded by maple and cedar trees. In the moss garden there is also the oldest building of the temple, the Ojo Gokuraku-in Hall, which was built around 985 and contains a statue of Amida Buddha. In the back of the garden there is a younger temple building and the treasury, in which some artefacts are on display.
