Question Discussed in the Video:
The world is on the cusp of a Solar Revolution. In this context, discuss the importance of Solar Energy, challenges related to the Solar Sector in India. Mention Government Schemes to enhance Solar Energy Production in India.
Ans:
The world is indeed on the cusp of a Solar Revolution, as the demand for clean and renewable energy continues to grow, and solar energy is emerging as one of the most promising sources of clean energy.
Importance of Solar Energy to India:
1. Environmental Development: India’s energy demands are largely fulfilled by non-renewable sources of energy. The scarcity of these fossil resources stresses the need for renewable energy sources. Abundance of solar energy can fulfil India's clean energy demands.
2. Energy Security: India being a developing economy needs proper electricity for industrial growth and agriculture. For achieving self-sufficiency and minimal cost in power generation, assured regular supply, solar energy can play a vital role.
3. Social development: The problem of power cuts and unavailability of electricity, especially in rural areas, leads to improper human development. The use of solar energy can enable social development in even the most remote areas of India.
4. Job Generation: The Solar Sector has immense potential to create new jobs, 1 GW of Solar manufacturing facility generates approximately 4000 direct and indirect jobs. In addition, solar deployment, operation and maintenance can create additional recurring jobs in the sector.
Challenges of Solar Energy in India:
1. High upfront cost of installing solar panels.
2. Technical challenges in improving efficiency and reliability of solar panels.
3. Challenges in developing infrastructure to store and distribute the energy generated.
4. Securing land for large-scale projects and overcoming resistance from local communities.
5. Import of hardware
6. Low cost to benefit in solar investments
7. Lack of Solar Waste Management Policy
Government Measures:
1. Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM): This is a comprehensive policy initiative launched by the Indian government in 2010 to promote the deployment of solar energy in India.
2. Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI): SECI is a public sector enterprise established by the Indian government to promote the development of solar energy in India.
3. Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs): The Indian government has established a market-based mechanism for trading Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) to incentivize the production of clean energy and promote the transition to a low-carbon energy system.
Other initiatives include- International Solar Alliance, Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan (PM-KUSUM), One Sun, One World, One Grid (OSOWOG), etc.
India is also targeting to reduce India’s total projected carbon emission by 1 billion tonnes by 2030, reduce the carbon intensity of the nation’s economy by less than 45% by the end of the decade, achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2070. Solar Energy helps in achieving this target.
