#1981- 1 ST WORLD FOOD DAY ISSUE:
At the request of the Food and Agricultural
Organization (F.A.O), every year the 16 th October is observed as ‘World Food Day’ by the
member nations throughout the world. The aim of observing this day is to highlight the nature
and dimension of shortage of food in the World and to fight against hunger, malnutrition and
poverty. In commemoration of this 1 st World Food Day in 1981, India issued this
commemorative coin on 16 th October, 1981. Out of the other 3 coins issued on the same theme,
the 25 paise coin was issued for general circulation and the 10 rupees & 100 Rupees were
issued as uncirculated/ Proof specimens.
OBSERVE: The observe of this coin shows Indian farmer couple – the man carrying a sheaf of
corn on his shoulder and the woman carrying a basket of fruit on her waste. The inscription
‘Biswa Khadya Diwas’ in Hindi and ‘World Food Day’ in English appear to the left of the
couple. ‘1981’ – the year of issue is shown under the couple.
REVERSE: The reverse of this coin shows the Ashokan lion and the value ‘10’ on the center. In
English “INDIA” and “PAISE” appear on the right side and in Hindi “Bharat” and “Paise”
appear on the left side.
