It’s been nearly 1.5 years since Texas passed its “heartbeat law” (SB 8) that banned abortions in the state past 6 weeks' gestation. This draconian law predated the fall of Roe v. Wade by several months and took the concept of stripping reproductive health to the extreme: SB 8 encouraged civilians to exact vigilante ‘justice’ on each other for the ‘crime’ of helping someone procure an abortion in any way. Unsurprisingly to me, my fellow healthcare professionals, and anyone who knows literally anything about this field (NOT looking at you, Texas state government), this has led to a huge spike in infant mortality. Let’s talk about why.
