This special region is committed to sustainable tourism and is a member of the "Alpine Pearls,“ a network of the most beautiful and environmentally conscious holiday destinations in the Alpine region. With its fascinating Dolomite backdrop the valley has been hardly developed with the exception of the occasional mountain farm or churches like St. Peter/St. Paul parish church, St. John's Church and St. Magdalena Church.

Beneath the vertical walls of the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites, green islands of forest and idyllic pastures stretch out. It offers the gentle flowers of the meadows and the mystical darkness of the forest up to an awe-worthy symphony of immense, grey rock walls: the Odle/Geisler group. These silent witnesses to the earth’s history characterise pristine Val di Funes/Villnöss, which is rich in contradictions and rich in natural beauty.

San Pietro is the main town of Funes and has around 630 inhabitants and is located in the center of the valley at 1,130 m. The church is the oldest in the valley and also called "the cathedral of the valley". The famous mountaineer Reinhold Messner spent his childhood in San Pietro and discovered his great passion for the mountains.
