Hydrogen Sulfide Leak at Texas Pemex Refinery Kills Two, Injures Dozens
A hydrogen sulfide leak at a Pemex oil refinery near Houston, Texas, led to the death of two workers and left nearly 36 others injured on Thursday. The incident happened at the plant located in Deer Park, a suburb of Houston, during work on a part of the facility called a flange. This plant is one of many oil refineries in the area, making it a key part of the country’s petrochemical industry.
After the leak, local officials quickly warned people living nearby to stay inside their homes to avoid exposure. However, later testing showed that there was no risk to the surrounding community, and the warning was lifted. Hydrogen sulfide is a gas that smells like rotten eggs and can be very dangerous in high concentrations.
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez reported that the plant was still too dangerous for investigators to enter even hours after the leak. It may take until Friday before authorities can safely inspect the scene. Pemex, the state-owned oil company of Mexico that operates the plant, confirmed that they had shut down two sections of the refinery as a safety measure. The company also said they are looking into what caused the leak.
