Tractor Trailer Rollover Accident - Uprighted in Mid-Air. Been a while since I tag teamed a rollover with my dad! If this spot looks familiar, it's because we get them here ALL. THE. TIME. This hot spot keeps us busy, but like always we were lightning fast and off the side to keep traffic open as much as possible.
The first step my dad did actually was scoot the container to us to free an additional lane, which made CHP very happy. In a perfect world the freeway would be fully shut down for maximum safety, but we are so experienced and comfortable working under these conditions and understand that heavy traffic can cause even more accidents. The customer's load was going to a local warehouse, while the tractor and trailer had to go back to the yard. For maximum efficiency, we rolled out a forklift and Landoll to take the load of coils.
Uprighting these loaded dry van trailers can be such a pain. You risk ripping the wall and spilling the load, and the way this load was it would have been difficult to even pre-pick it since all the weight was small and concentrated up front only. My dad made the right call to offload, and while that was happening I started to work on the tractor. After splitting it, we upright it and put it to the side up front. Then I rigged the trailer for both trucks. By the time I was done, the trailer was empty and we got to work.
Tons of calories burned up in this horrible heat, but worth it once it came over by doing a mid air roll. I even got fancy with this one by using my Wreckmaster Wrinkle to double as my lift and catch point. Once I have enough air, I go in with the lift cable while letting out on the catch until it's even, then cables down for both of them until it's touching the freeway. Enrique backed up the tractor to the now empty trailer, and off we all went.
What did everyone think of this "barrel roll/mid air roll" technique we did?
