Mitsubishi’s best selling car in the US
The Mitsubishi Outlander has been the best selling Mitsubishi car in the United States. Will the 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander keep that spot in 2021 Mitsubishi’s lineup?
The Outlander has been popular in Europe with the addition of an electric vehicle option. In the US it is one of the lesser known mid size crossover SUV options. Mitsubishi dealerships in the US are thinly spread: this is a factor in the limited nationwide sales. Since this is a more exotic option resale value in the US is not that great.
We expect the 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander to be the second model year of an all new fourth generation. The Outlander is the largest of the Mitsubishi crossovers.
We expect that Mitsubishi efforts to build electric and hybrid vehicles will continue for the fourth generation. We hope to see the new Mitsubishi generation models soon. They might be longer and wider to appeal to the Chinese market.
The Outlander plug-in hybrid has been one of the best selling hybrid cars across Europe, and the all electric version was the third best selling all electric car just falling behind the Tesla Model S and Nissan leaf.
The US version of the 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander
The American version of the Outlander misses the all-electric option but has the plugin hybrid option. The Japanese carmaker is offering 5 trims for the normal gas version. All trims are offered with a four All-Wheel Control option (AWC) and a Forward Wheel Drive.
Regular engine options include a 166 horsepower 2.4L MIVEC SOHC 16-valve Inline 4-cylinder and a 3.0 L 24-valve Inline V6. The latter ups the amount of horse power to 224.
Powertrain transmission is continuously variable for the lower tier, the 3.0 L engine has a 6 speed electronic automatic transmission. Mitsubishi outlander sport does not differ much from the regular Outlanders.
The 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV option has a 2.0L MIVEC SOHC 16-valve Inline 4-cylinder with only 117 horse power. This is combined with a 60 kilowatt AC electromagnetic motor that offers 190 horsepower. A mayor drawback is that the PHEV does not have a third row option. The Board Charger (OBC) and Rear Motor Control Unit (RMCU) are located under the rear cargo floor where the third row seats would be, this limits the 3rd row possibility.
It is not impacting performance, it pulls up faster than the regular version.
When driving on the electric engine the Outlander produces sounds to warn unsuspecting pedestrians with the Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System.
