(25 Aug 1977) A Beirut market bomb blast and an ambush in Lebanon's hill country have left nearly a dozen dead and revived memories of the country's bloody civil war. Arab League troops, which are overwhelmingly Syrian soldiers, have stepped up security patrols in the area of the blast and have launched a dragnet to find the assassins who ambushed two Druze leftists. At least eight people died in the blast in Beirut's downtown Place des Martyres. The twin attacks are the latest in a series of incidents since fighting between rightwing Phalangists and leftist Palestinians escalated a week ago. They sparked an emergency meeting between Lebanon's Interior Minister, Salah Salman and the security chiefs of the Lebanese army and the Arab League troops.
