On 27 July 2006, George Michael spoke to ITN about the ongoing press attention he was receiving after having been photographed 'cruising' on Hampstead Heath the previous week. At one point during the interview, the Wham! star issued a fierce takedown of what he called "straight society" for its portrayal of him as "some kind of loser". Describing himself as "a very very happy gay man", Michael argued that his was a lifestyle many people would be happy with, and condemned the press for their focus on his private life, which he alleged was caused by homophobic bias.
