What's the best Ice Melt? DIY how to choose Ice Melt. Calcium Chloride vs Magnesium Chloride
First things first it's important to remember that ice melt products were designed to melt ice and not snow. Please remove and shovel the snow away then apply these products. The magnesium and calcium chloride can be used as preventive products but will need to be re applied after you remove the snow to continually prevent ice from forming.
What's the best ice melt? That's a great question. Today we explore 5 different products
1. Salt, Ice Bomb
Pros:
- Salt is cheap and easy to use. It works well for well established concrete areas
Cons:
- Removes finishes on stone and concrete
- Freeze point is still high at 15 Degrees F
- Not safe for newly laid concrete
- Not safe for plants and grass
2. Magnesium Chloride, Iceaway Max Green:
Pros: - Friendly for newly laid concrete
- low freeze point at -15 degrees
- Effectively works to -5 degrees
- Marketed as safest for use around animals / plants / grass
- Reacts with water and produces heat between 75 & 90 degrees
Cons: - Gums up when over applied
- Can & will gum up equipment
- Easily tracked into the house
- Will remove finishes on tile, granite, lime stone if not immediately washed off
- Multiple applications commonly necessary (not long lasting)
- Not safe for plants and lawns when over applied in one area.
3. Calcium Chloride, Peladow Calcium Chloride
Pros
- Lowest effective rate. Will melt ice down to -25 degrees.
- Rates safe for use around animals, vegetations and lawns
- Quickest at melting ice
- Reacts with water and releases the most heat. I've tested it at over 120 degrees
- Lower application rate than mag chloride
Cons-
- Expensive by comparison
- When over applied it can harm grass and plants
- Can be dusty when applied
4. Combination product using Magnesium Chloride and Salt Purple Heat
Pros:- Great for areas that commonly don't get below 10 degrees
- Magnesium coated to react with water causing the water to heatup to 80 degrees.
- Purple die allows you to see where it's been placed.
- Less expensive than a magnesium chloride and calcium chloride products
Cons: - Not safe for newly laid concrete
- It's a Magnesium chloride coated product not blended
- not as environmentally friendly as magnesium chloride and calcium chloride
5. Combination product using Magnesium Chloride and Sodium Chloride Iceaway Turbo
Pros- safe for established concrete
- Effective rate down to 0 degrees
- Less corrosive than traditional salts
- safer for vegetation and lawns than traditional salts
- Cost effective
- Magnesium chloride is blended into the entire pearled granular for longer lasting release
Cons -
- Not the best for cold climates that consistently get below 0 degrees
- Multiple applications necessary for heavy ice areas
Considering all of these choices I've chosen to use Peladow. I've personally tried all of these products and I like Peladow the best. I like the fact that it melts ice fast, it's a safer choice for use on my concrete and for my pets to walk on.
