Vlog: 4 (2023)
The Dayara Bugyal trek in winter is a unique vast landscape. Dayara Bugyal is a Himalayan alpine meadow in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand and is a popular trekking and camping destination. The Bugyal has an average altitude of 3639 m and is nestled between Deodar and Rhododendrons trees and is rich in flora and fauna. In winter, Dayara Bugyal turns into a snow land known for Skiing and Snow activities. The trek is open throughout the year except for Monsoon during July and August.
Not many people know that Dayara Bugyal trek has the biggest snow expanse. It is so big and wide that sometimes you cannot see the end of the whiteness. Seeing it in such a wide canvas as Dayara is a rarity. What is more rare is the sight of Mt Banderpoonch and Black peak towering almost 21,000 feet over Dayara. Seeing these mountains just popping out of the snow expanse of Dayara is the reason why everyone must do this trek.
But it is not just these mountains. In a full sweep, panning from your left to right, in a wide panorama are some of the other great mountains of the Garhwal Himalayas — Mt Srikanth, Draupadi Ka Danda and Mt Jaunli. Also we see Bhagirathi peaks, Draupadi ka Danda, Gangotri ranges, Yamuntri ranges.
You get big snow expanse only when you climb to very high altitudes where the temperatures dips to negative. In Dayara, climbing to about 12,000 feet gets you to this vantage point. It is quite an adventure to get there. It needs some effort to climb through the forests, floors of which are lined by a carpet of snow.
Dayara Bugyal is often placed at the top, when trekkers discuss the most beautiful meadow in India only to be hotly contested and pushed to the next best, after Bedni Bugyal. But undisputedly, Dayara Bugyal would fall within the two most beautiful high altitude meadows in India.
This trek was organised by Indiahikes, which is the best and safest when it comes to trekking in India. We started the our journey from Dehradun where we were picked up on the first day, then we went to Raithal which was about 185 kms. There we had Swiss tents to stay. From Raithal we went to Gui on the second day which was about 4.5 kms. Then from Gui we went to Chilapada on the third day, from Chilapada we went to Dayara top and then descend to Nayata.
But since we did the trek in January and the snow expanse was so dense, we could not reach the top. But the trek leaders of Indiahikes did their best to ensure we reached as close as possible to the top and we get the best experience. But I must tell you the temperature in winter seasons dips to as low as -10 degrees especially in the morning which again was great experience to have sustained such an extreme weather. The trek was just about 25 kms so it can be done very easily by beginners also.
