QUOTE REF ISRAEL: Morris Abrams, Chair of the Conference of Major
SYND Jewish Organisations in America, condemns the meeting of
15.7.87 Pope John Paul II with Austrian Pres Kurt Waldheim because of
LN124076 allegations concerning the latter's involvement with Nazi
activities as a German officer during World War II. Following
a meeting with Israeli PM Yitzhak Shamir Abrams said his
conference was not planning to participate in a joint effort
with Israel regarding a possible change in attitude towards
the Vatican choosing instead to look at the Pope's decision
to meet with Waldheim as a mistake in what is otherwise a
good relationship between the Jewish people and the Vatican.
