I imagine this will prove to be one of my last rides on a Caltrain Gallery consist. With a retirement date of September 2024, neither the Gallery cars, nor the original F40PH-2s, are long for this world.
Someone could probably correct me on this one, but I understand the Caltrain electrification project does not depend on CARB-related grants? So I would presume this means any F40PH-2 units retired by Caltrain could be left in operational condition, and sold to another operator, or donated to a heritage line or museum. Of course, in a perfect world, I would love to see such a locomotive, as well as a 5-car Gallery set, preserved by Caltrain as an historic consist for celebrations or holidays.
Still, I understand Caltrain is a utility with priorities outside the scope of “historic rail preservation”, so I will be pleased to see if *anything* is preserved.
