Andriy Yermak, head of the office of the president of Ukraine, updates on Ukraine’s fightback and its negotiating position, and talks about Russia’s objectives, Ukraine’s aims, and the responsibilities of democratic states.
Almost one month since Russia invaded Ukraine, the Kremlin has so far failed to achieve significant strategic advances, but is targeting civilian infrastructure, conducting indiscriminate bombing, and laying siege to large cities in the south and east.
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) says at least 816 civilians were killed and 1,333 wounded in the period to 17 March. The government of Ukraine estimates destruction to date totals over $500 billion.
In parallel to the war, multiple tracks of negotiations for a ceasefire and a possible peace agreement are taking place, but it is doubtful significant progress in narrowing the divide between Russian and Ukrainian positions is currently possible. Many suspect Russia is using the negotiations as a tactic to regroup and adapt to Ukraine’s defence strategy.
